Wena Wezulu – An essential conversation

2 min read

NB:This is is a 2019 import.

“This project is to prompt you to talk about leadership challenges holding our continent back.”

Qiniso Mbili, Award winning Journalist, Producer and Photographer.

Yesterday I was fortunate to attend a prestigious photography exhibition which took me beyond flashlights and posing.

As a journalist – or rather former journalist, I have a passionate for addressing the leadership calamity in our beloved country. Through observation, I am of the opinion that as youth, we are not exploring this subject as much as we should be.

From the allegedly corrupt parliamentarian, to the ungodly ‘Man of God’, right down to your toxic manager. A leader shapes your path.

With just one glance at Mbili’s work, you can already picture the conversation he’s trying to have. Now think what would happen if you engaged him. If you learnt from the conversation and shared the knowledge with your friends and their friends.

Attached below is my personal favorite. A crowd united for a common cause.

Approaching the image with a blank mind and not knowing it’s history, my first observation is the contrast between men and women. The said stronger gender is securely nestled in the heart of its victims.

To me, this screams: battle to find gender balance in leadership roles. The photo serves as clear indication of how far we are from Mendoza’s 50-50.

Why is there not even ONE female among the men? I would love to hear your opinions. Take this is an opportunity for you to analyze the image and have the conversation with yourself.

Or you can engage us in the comments.
