I have always imagined my writing ghost to be an old, sad woman who died before her peak. Growing older is starting to make me feel more like her. As if my life will be a thing of the past before I make a name for myself.
Growing up, my grandfather made me believe I had what it takes to be a Xolani Gwala of my time. As a child I believed him, as a teenager not so much. I just let the idea simmer at the back of my mind.
After studying, I made it to the big waves. I was a believer again. With every new opportunity people would tell me how well I was doing and how much potential I had. This could be a reach but it’s possible that some of the world’s greatest have told me that.
“Sometimes, sitting here in the dark, slowly slowly creating strategy, she wondered if she was only fooling herself to think her plans were clever.”
― Vernor Vinge, The Children of the Sky
A quote that summarises my existence.
In spite of the desire to do more, life – to a certain extent, has been kind to me. Passion has seen me on billboards, TV screens, car stereos and almost every other existing medium.
Ungomunye wabo, you’re one of them
Life in the public eye began after graduating from Journalism school. As described by Alex Mthiyane, my “professionally soothing” voice saw me become a News Anchor for the country’s leading, privately owned, regional, commercial radio station. I find this emphasis funny. Each time I have to write it, my imposter tells me I’m trying too hard.
While on radio, I doubled up as a model working with brands like Nescafe, Express Stores and Varsity College among others.
Along with my modelling career, my social media community was on an upward spiral which elevated me to partnerships with Orange River Cellars, Unilever and Beiersdorf AG. Professionally, I have worked as a print/digital journalist, community manager and marketing manager in various sectors including property, finance and construction.

Somehow none of these achievements feel enough. I wake up wanting to do more, to be more, to live the life I’ve always imagined for myself. Life as a writer.
One of my favourite things about Johannesburg is that much like what New York is said to be, you’re allowed to be. Whether it’s scamming or ‘9-5ing‘, this city enables you to live your wildest dreams. Mediocrity only exists if your confidence is lacking. In Joburg you can end a sentence with a full-stop and make everyone believe you’re the next Toni Morrison.
This place has given me the courage I’ve prayed for my entire life. It’s given me the freedom to write my heart out and watch the words blossom into Madibas.

As for scamming guuurl🤭. Enjoyed this piece❤️
Very much inspiring 👏🏾 💯
I chuckled at the fact that you can be a scammer and thought of a few 😅 your grandfather really saw a potential in you and it’s a good thing that you’re back to believing that again ❤️
