The smell of gunpowder lingers in the air, mingling with the acrid scent of smoke and fear. The apartment feels like a prison, the walls closing in as reality starts to sink in.
My hands are still trembling. The phone slipped and clattered to the floor, its screen cracked but still glowing with the message from Enhle. The irony is suffocating. Here I was, on the cusp of unveiling my masterpiece, “A Novel In Real Time”, only to be plunged into a living nightmare.
“I need to breathe.”
Each inhale feels like shards of glass scraping my throat. Sirens and the distant, haunting cries have replaced the gunshots. The city below has become a chaotic mosaic of flashing lights and dark shadows. Police cars and ambulances moving like blood through veins. My reflection is a stranger - pale and drawn, eyes wide with shock.

The serene morning haze ripped away, revealing an unforgiving reality. The half-eaten breakfast, the lingering scent of his cologne - the disarray of hurried mornings and whispered goodbyes. It all seems so distant now, as if belonging to another lifetime.
The door burst open and for the first time in what felt like a lifetime, I am relieved. Wrapping me in a suffocating embrace, he joined the echoing siren choir.
"We need to go.”
“Now."
My mind is racing, trying to process his words, the events, the fear. “What's happening?" I managed to choke out, my voice barely a whisper. He pulled back, his grip on my arms tightening.
"No time to explain. Just do as I ask.”
The air is thick with tension, every sound amplified - the rustle of clothes, the clink of keys, the pounding of our hearts. We managed to slip out of the apartment, the hallway eerily quiet despite the chaos outside. Each step echoes ominously, a reminder of the lurking danger. We descend in silence, our breaths synchronised, a shared rhythm of survival.
Outside, the world is a different place. The sun has risen higher, its light casting stark shadows that seem to mock dawn’s fragile safety.
As we turned a corner, a figure emerged from the shadows, blocking our path. My heart skipped a beat, a cold dread washing over me. The man was tall, his face obscured by a hood, his stance menacing. He stepped forward and in an instant, I recognized him.
"It's you," I breathed, the words escaping before I could stop them.
His lips curled into a sinister smile. "Flattered by the recognition."
I glanced at my Bhu, his face ashen, his eyes filled with a mix of fear and recognition. "Nifunani?" he demanded, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hands.
The man laughed, a chilling sound that sent shivers down my spine. "What we want," he said slowly, "is to finish what was started.”
A cold realization dawned on me. This isn't random. It is planned, calculated. The threads of this man’s past, the secrets he kept, are unraveling, pulling us into a web of danger and deceit.
"Run," he whispered urgently, his grip on my hand tightening.
"Now."
We bolted, the world around us a blur of motion and sound.
The chase has begun and with it, the dawn of a new reality - a life on the run. A universe where every shadow holds a threat and every step brings me closer to the truth I tried so hard to escape.
As we disappeared into the city, one thought echoed in my mind: The Novel In Real Time isn't just a book. It is a lifeline, a beacon of hope in a world suddenly dark and perilous. And I will do whatever it takes to see it through, to uncover the truth and reclaim my life.
