Before diving in, I want it clarified that I do not identify as a Christian. Nor do I subscribe to its teachings.
At exactly a month before my 28th birthday, I decided to go to church. This occasion is of significance because it is my first visit in over a decade. Excluding the 2 times I went for funerals. It is also important to note that in both times, I only met the people on their obituaries.
My family leads a rural lifestyle. We rarely need a church. Our funerals start and end in the same yard the person explored from birth to death. For us, going to the holy house is a choice. One that you make according to personal beliefs, values and the path you choose.
Today my decisions landed me at Grace Bible Church and here are the lessons I learned.
Vision
As described by the pastor, the word above is a vivid picture of what your life on this planet could be. Unlike the preachers I’ve experienced, she was soft-spoken and calm. She captured the audience’s ear with her words. She didn’t pull any of the theatrical stunts preachers pull when delivering the word of God.
She went on to explain how the lack of responsibility can sabotage the journey from vision to real life. She said it is the inability to carve your life towards fulfilling it. It is fearing the possibility that you can be all that you imagine.
In her message she also highlighted that this idea of who one can be is quite personal. It is one between your spirit, soul and the higher power that governs your life.

At almost 28, I can say I am a visionary. I have watched my wildest thoughts bloom into the blessings and curses you witness as my life on Earth. My flesh has enjoyed moments I once day-dreamed of. My mind laughs because it believed those would never go beyond its boarders.
Today’s message reminded me that I can think things into existence. It reiterated that even though my path is different; I am somehow guided by the same values as Christians. It prompted me to write this piece. To translate the message for those like me. The ones who question God’s will but still believe in answered prayers. The ones who understand that no amount of prayers will shield you from life happening.

If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength?
Proverbs 24v10
The verse above is a guide. Along with the 7 pillars below, I hope it carries you to the life in your wildest dreams.
CHANGE
This is a personal one. Only you know the change required. Let go of any experience that does not align with your vision.
RESILIENT PASSION
Be passionate enough to brave through the storms along your journey. The courage will come from how much you want to fulfil the idea in your mind.
COMMITMENT
Stay committed to the end goal.
BELIEVE
Live like you’ve fulfilled your vision. It is only a matter of time before the world gets to witness it.
TIMING
I am not a fan of that ‘when I the lord and time’ quote. It somehow makes it about the other person more than the visionary. As an earthly being, I believe in right place, right time. Trust that such a time will come for you.
FOCUS
Whatever you give your time to, you give a part of your life. Focus on things that matter. If you can’t change it, let go and focus on the things you can change.
PERSEVERANCE
Stick it out!
Remember that the bible is a story of one man’s vision. His goal being to convert all humans into fellowship. Do you think any of the disciples thought they’d live this long. That thousands of decades later their legacies would be examples of how man should be?
