Wrapping up a week in My Dream Life

3 min read

The opportunity for "answered prayers" is so clear that sometimes we don’t even realize we've stepped through to the other side. While waiting, we squint and tilt our heads, trying to understand what our eyes cannot visualize. We sigh in exhaustion and impatient mutters, wondering when the fog will clear.

This isn’t just a long-overdue blog post; it's a heartfelt gratitude piece, a testimony to the power of manifesting your dreams, a pillar of sorts - a monument to serve as a reminder should my spirit ever lose hope.

A few years ago, I moved to Johannesburg, the city of gold. At 26, with big dreams and reservations in mind, I found myself navigating a new professional role and adjusting to Joburg’s whirlwind culture. With three people reporting to me and my direct manager being the CEO, I held the title of Marketing Manager at a fintech startup. It was an honor, a privilege, an ancestor's dream.

Originally from Pietermaritzburg, I moved to Durban at 18. My first venture beyond KZN’s borders was for a brand collaboration at 22. It is essential to highlight that this was also my first time on a flight. Moving to Joburg was a combination of simple yet mind-boggling experiences: seeing more Porsches than Polos, touching an LV bag - memories more luxurious than anything Seventeen Magazine (remember that gem?) ever showcased.

Working in finance was enlightening. I learned about audiences and their unique languages - my brain buzzed with "brand alignment beyond aesthetics." But the challenges piled up and to protect my mental health, I treaded to shore.

"Be careful what you wish for.”

The tweet above has become an answered manifestation.

From that moment, I poured myself into research, made the right connections and landed jobs aligned with my dream career.

Fast forward to this week

I started a new role at an agency that deals with finance. Three years later, I’m mentally, socially and physically equipped to live my dream Joburg life. For those who grew up watching Generations, you know the Ezweni Communications lifestyle - a cute apartment at Siqalo Court, a Face Of/Ambassador deal as a side hustle and the privilege of saying, “I’ll take this call in the car.”

Wrapping up the first week of my dream life has taught me the importance of slowing down to appreciate how far I’ve come. The constant goal-chase makes it easy to overlook that we’ve already achieved some of our biggest dreams. So, take a moment to breathe, reflect and give yourself credit for the milestones you've reached.

“I'm not lost for I know where I am. But, however, where I am may be lost.”

My childhood friend Winnie the Pooh.

Cheers to the journey!

  1. So happy for you Nomfundo. You’re my favourite girl because you say the things I feel so well. All the best in your new role and if the going gets tough may you remember that by the mere fact that you have a desire then you already have it. I love you so much and crossing paths with you on social media remains one of my favourite things ❤️🫂
